Air purifiers come in many forms there are Ionisers, HEPA filter units and Airfree units to name a few. All of these air purifiers do different things, and it is important to understand what each one can do prior to purchasing so that you can choose the correct one for your specific needs.
Why is it important to have a filter system in your house or office? Your regular air conditioner filter system just circulates the air inside your house, over and over again. The air goes through a simple filter system, which removes large particles of dirt, but is relatively ineffective for smaller dust particles such as dust mites, harmful bacteria or viruses. These can all cause asthma and/or allergies when inhaled over long periods of time.
HEPA Filters
Filter and trap airbourne pollutants. HEPA filters are critical in the prevention of the spread of airborne bacterial and viral organisms and, therefore, infection. Some of the best-rated HEPA units such as the Blueair range of air purifiers have an efficiency rating of 99%, which assures a very high level of protection against airborne disease transmission. They are excellent for allergies, hayfever and asthma.
Carbon Filters
For use in smoking environments these filters remove smoke and chemical pollutants such as outgassing from new furniture, carpets and paint. These filters are loaded with an extra-heavy amount of activated carbon to absorb the smoke, chemicals and particles. Blueair has this as an additional option to the HEPA filter as do the Coway models.
Ionisers
Basically ionisers make airbourne particles heavier with a negative charge - negative ions. Some of the negatively charged particles drop to the floor and surfaces with approximately 70% being attracted to blades of the ioniser electrostatically, similar to the way dust is attracted to a computer monitor. We inhale negative ions in abundance in certain environments such as mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that are mood enhancing and help to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.
Airfree Air Purifiers
Airfree incinerates microorganisms at its heated capillaries. Contaminated air is dragged into Airfree’s ceramic core by air convection and microorganisms are destroyed at high temperatures regardless of how resistant and dangerous they might be. The air coming out of the unit is cooled back down to room temperature.
Combination Filter and Ioniser
These units have both technolgies incorporated into them such as the Ion Ace 512 and the Coway air purifiers.
Room Size
Each unit is made to optimally work in a specific room size see the room size pages.
